Īlso called the “ Greek pantheon ,” this new batch of deities became more famous than their predecessors. These gods were identified as Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hephaestus, Hermes, Poseidon, and Dionysus. īut their rule did not last forever because they were also overthrown by their children, who would later become known as the gods of Mount Olympus. With Uranus ’ defeat, the Titans ruled and became the new Greek gods. His genitals dropped to the sea, becoming foam that turned into the goddess Aphrodite. The incident separated heaven ( Uranus ) and Earth ( Gaia ).Īmazingly, the blood that dripped out of Uranus and dropped on Gaia gave rise to new beings: With the help of the pillar gods from the four corners of the Earth, Cronus trapped his father and cut his genitals. Many of the Titans were scared of their father, except the youngest named Cronus. Uranus thought that the Hecatoncheires and the Cyclops were too ugly and powerful, so he imprisoned them in the depths of the Underworld.įurious, Gaia rallied her other children, the Titans, to help her take revenge. They also had other children: the Cyclops (circle-eyed beings) and the Hecatoncheires (the hundred-handed ones). The two were the parents of the pre- Olympian gods called the twelve Titans. Gaia created Uranus (god of heavens) and became his wife. From this void sprang other primordial deities: Eros (Love), Gaia ( Earth ), and Tartarus (the Underworld). Some of them might have the qualities you’re looking for or names that could be a nice choice for your baby.Īccording to Greek mythology, in the beginning, there was only Chaos, the primeval god who’s also the personification of the gaping emptiness. But there are dozens of other gods and goddesses that may not be famous but still figured in great stories. Many of us know about Zeus, Hercules, Aphrodite, Hades, and Poseidon. Are you familiar with some stories of Greek gods and goddesses? The promise of a better-than-average remake quickly gives way to tedium. It just doesn’t give us interesting or empathetic characters and doesn’t seem to have any of the grim energy that made its predecessor so memorable and frightening. The premise isn’t too bad, and Pulse gamely tries to recreate what worked for the 2001 original. All in the name of finding the humanity within themselves that’s long gone. Turns out the spirit world is using our technology, basically anything with a screen, to reach out and destroy any living thing they meet. A young woman (Kristen Bell, who in hindsight is very out of place) tries to understand her boyfriend’s bizarre, unexpected suicide. Other than an absolutely delightful cameo by Brad Dourif, there isn’t very much to recommend with this dreary American remake of the 2001 Japanese horror film. #HUNGRY BABIES MANIA LEVEL 98 MOVIE#As we look through some of the worst misfires in the subgenre of horror film remakes, take a moment to appreciate just how many ways a movie can potentially collapse under its own ambition. Some movies are just bad, with very little to recommend. Unfortunately, “almost” is another word to keep in mind. Others have an approach to reimagining beloved material that is at least admirable, if not successful.Īlmost none of the ten worst horror movie remakes discussed here could be considered thoroughly terrible. Some of them have noteworthy performances. Most of the films we’re going to highlight here have good components or ideas going for them. “Disappointing” should be the word to keep in mind with this look at the worst horror movie remakes to come out. This applies to movies you may not like, and it applies wholesale to even the most disappointing remakes or reboots of your favorite horror films. That night a hysterical Charlotte phoned Zep tour manager and all-round fixer Richard Cole in London, begging him to do something to get everyone home. The process was painfully slow, with only one doctor on duty at the cockroach-ridden Greek hospital. Maureen had lost a lot of blood, and because she had a rare type could only take Shirley’s blood for immediate transfusion. Scarlet was the only one to escape with just a few cuts and bruises. Karac had also broken a leg, while Carmen had broken her wrist. There it was discovered that Maureen had suffered a fractured skull and broken her pelvis and her leg. Fortunately, Charlotte and Shirley, in the next car, were there to summon help, but it was still several hours before the family could be taken – on the back of a nearby fruit farmer’s flatbed truck – to the local hospital. Looking at Maureen, who was bleeding and unconscious, he thought she was dead. When Robert had landed on top of Maureen, the impact shattered his right ankle and elbow and snapped several bones in his right leg. Just that the car Maureen Plant was driving skidded and spun off the road, nose-diving over a precipice and into a tree. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and Peter Grant attending the premiere for The Song Remains The Same in London on Novem(Image credit: Chris Walters)Īfterwards, nobody who was there could remember exactly what happened or why. And nothing would ever be the same again. Unstoppable, unbreachable, invulnerable, nothing could go wrong. This was Led Zeppelin at the very top of the mountain, able to look down on nearest rivals such as the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd from a considerable height. Most of the ensuing period would be taken up touring the world, it was decided, affording the band unusual opportunities to travel to territories they had never been able to before – South America was seriously discussed, as was India, Africa and other previously thought out-of-the-way stops on the rock’n’roll map. There was also the fact that they were now obliged to become tax exiles, unable to return to the UK for more than 30 days until April 1976. Their most recent US tour had only ended in March, but with combined album sales and tour receipts estimated to have topped $40 million (more than $185m in today’s money) they were keen to keep momentum flowing. The plan was to all meet up again in Paris a couple of days later where they would begin rehearsals for Zeppelin’s next US tour, scheduled to begin with two shows, already sold-out, on August 23 and 24 at the 90,000-capacity Oakland Coliseum in San Francisco. On August 3, Jimmy left the party briefly to fly to Sicily to visit Aleister Crowley’s old Abbey of Thelema, which occult filmmaker Kenneth Anger had told him so much about and that he was now considering buying. Not as extreme as the Vulcan, but less vulnerable to disruption and cheaper to support. Shields? What shields? Would be higher if not for the cooldown.Ĭheap and stuns, but has 2 second longer cooldown than Ion Blast I, and with ion weapons rate of fire is everything. Unloading a shot a second at maximum charge, This weapon can single-handedly tear apart all but the most heavily defended ships, but the charge period, 4 power requirement, and extreme vulnerability to disruption (particularly ion or hacking) keeps it out of the top tiers. Tier 2 - Good weapons for the dedicated gunship 30 scrap, 1 power and 8 sec cooldown is dirt cheap for a great supporting weapon. I put this in Tier 1 just for how cheap it is. The go-to missile for beating defense drones and/or locking down a room with rapid fire.įast unstoppable little weapon for hammering enemy systems and crew. Tier 1 - These are solid and should be acquired by anyone looking to improve weaponsĦ5 scrap, 3 power and 17 seconds is cheap for this kind of damage potential.Ĭharges 1 shot every 7 seconds for upto 3 1-damage shots. The go-to for rapid-fire precision damage.ģ shots, 10 seconds, 2 power. Tier 0 - Prioritize these weapons, they help no matter what type of strategy you follow.ģ shots, 12 seconds, 2 power. These are weapons that (depending on luck) may be purchased or found in regular gameplay. A system which is destroyed by boarders or fire deals hull damage, so better remove the vulnerability by keeping it pre-damaged!Īnd now we come to the Store Weapons. Do you see the problem?! This weapon is literally not worth the reactor power, and it can’t even be sold! In fact, if it ever gets damaged, don’t repair it. The Flak II gives you 7 aimed shots at 21 seconds (17 seconds with a fully trained crew) for 3 power and costs 80. Why?Īfter 160 scrap to fully upgrade, you get 7 unaimed flak at 20 seconds for 4 power. Even a Tier 3 might be a better choice depending on circumstance.Ģ shots with 1-shield pierce, but long cooldown and can be stopped by defense drones.Ģ seconds faster than Artemis, 1 less damage, not worth it.ġ shot every 10 seconds… there are better weapons for 1 power.Ī bomb that does no system damage, does not breach, ionize, or set on fire. Jettison – These are weapons that need to be replaced as soon as you find something from Tier 0, 1 or 2 on the store weapon list. The only question is if there might be better things to buy.Īt only 1 power, makes a very cheap supporting weapon. Artillery Beam (Federation A, Federation B)Ĭosts 160 scrap to fully upgrade, at which point you get a guaranteed 3-6 unaimed damage every 20 seconds.IMO, tied in 2nd place with Pegasus for missile weapons. One power for a 2-damage missile every 11 seconds. Artemis Missile (Kestrel A, Rock A, Slug B).One second extra for a heavy laser that penetrates 1 shield. Upgrade – These are solid weapons, and should only be replaced if you need to make room for a high-ranked Store Weapon (see below list) Dual Lasers (Slug A, Stealth A, Federation B, Kestrel C, Engi C)Ģ lasers at 10 seconds for 1 power, another very efficient weapon.ģ flak shots for 1 power and 8 seconds, the most efficient weapon in the game bar none.Ģ lasers at 11 seconds or 1 every 5.5 at 1 power. Keep – These are weapons that should see you all the way to the boss. I’m rating them separately because you don’t really have an option with the Starting Weapons, you have them, the only question is to keep them or not. Starting weapons can only be found aboard the ship that has them (I include Crystal weapons because getting to the Crystal Sector to buy them is an extremely rare and difficult event) and Store Weapons can be found or purchased in regular gameplay. Now, this list is split into two – Starting Weapons and Store Weapons. Yes, I know I’m years late, but I only really got into FTL a year ago, and I finally feel I’ve played it enough to create my own weapon tiers. Her break for freedom - filmed from start to tragic end - traumatised a city and ignited a global battle over the use of animals in the entertainment industry. True to their title, you will feel like Tyke is a hero by the end of the film the actions of this elephant have changed the cultural response towards the use of animal performers and liberated numerous other elephants – in this sense, Tyke truly is an outlaw anti-hero.This is the gripping and emotionally charged story of Tyke, a circus elephant that went on a rampage in Honolulu in 1994, killed her trainer in front of thousands of spectators and died in a hail of gunfire. In the wrong hands this could have been bloated and preachy or even cheesily constructed, but in their capable hands we are presented with something that is interesting, informative, well paced and level headed. Lambert and Moore have demonstrated that they can craft a very solid documentary and I’m interested to see what they work on next. In this sense, Lambert and Moore manage to remove themselves from their content fairly well, leaving us with a very organic feeling documentary experience.Īll in all Tyke Elephant Outlaw is well worth checking out for the curious, a strong effort that covers an interesting tale with interesting characters – the serious differences in opinion, and regular cognitive dissonance on display is fascinating – and while it’s by no means perfect, it plays well here and will screen even better on a televisual medium. Instead, Lambert and Moore skillfully allow people to fall on their own swords, painting themselves into a corner with their own words and demonstrating a levels of cognitive dissonance and inhumanity through their own, unjudged actions. This stands in stark contrast to Blackfish‘s decision to crucify those who continue to work with animals and deify individuals who have left the industry for ethical reasons. It’s an important story, although perhaps not as important as the similar narrative in Blackfish as there is a far greater consensus publicly on the inhumanity of animal circus practices now than there was in regards to marine parks at the time of Blackfish‘s release. What Tyke does far better than Blackfish, though, is hold a far stronger grasp on the notion of objectivity, not demonizing those that still work in the circus industry, with an acknowledgement that there are far more intricacies informing individual decisions and motivations behind such a line of work than just the morality of the situation. However, in spite of this underutilized element, the film is well constructed and, at times, even captivating.įunded by the ABC, and (presumably) subsequently sold to a number of different international television broadcasters, it’s great to see this screening theatrically on the festival circuit. These interviews are intercut with footage of Tyke herself before her defining act of defiance and the event, which was widely recorded by members of the general public at the time as the event occurred right in the middle of the consumer-grade camcorder boom phase. It’s interesting that Lambert and Moore seek to draw comparison between Tyke’s actions and those of infamous anti-heroes from Westerns, and I wish they had pursued this line of logic further. It’s a proficient way to attack the material and paint a broad picture of why this event was important, as well as demonstrating the effects that the incident had on everyone down the chain. After briefly establishing the incident, Lambert and Moore treat us to a set of fascinating interviews with Tyke’s ex-trainers, the group that used to lease elephants out to circus shows, prolific animal rights activists who were at the forefront of campaigns to outlaw animal circuses in Honolulu, people in the circus animal industry, and even a man who acts as a lobbyist for circus groups pushing a line of ‘the circus is good, old fashioned, all-American fun’. This sparked public outcry and permanently tarnished the already diminished brand of animal circuses. The film centers on a prolific, animal-activism defining event in August of 1994 that saw a circus elephant (Tyke) break from and attack its handlers before going on a rampage through Honolulu streets, after which it was executed in a barrage of gunfire by police officials. The new feature length documentary outing from television director/producers Susan Lambert and Stefan Moore, Tyke Elephant Outlaw, is a fascinating take-down of the practices of circuses that incorporate animal performers, the film in the vein of a smaller-scale Blackfish. The Documentary Australia program at the Sydney Film Festival always has some interesting inclusions, and this year’s line-up is no exception. Unfortunately, most agree that the use of a deus ex machina can be viewed as the lazy way out. Well, if you couldn’t recall or simply weren’t around for those times, sadly, they happened - but they are all prime examples of deus ex machina.Ī deus ex machina often brings forth a peaceful resolution, but not everyone loves a happy ending (at least, not when it’s unearned). Or perhaps how he always seems to have his hand dandy, overly conspicuous, and often oddly specific tool for the job: “Robin, hand me my handy shark repellent.” Does anyone remember how the actor just so happened to fall into a mattress factory after falling from a helicopter?
